My Story
I started ceramics while attending a course in BIFE, Bray.
Unlike some potters it was not an immediate connection with clay. I very much enjoyed other subjects while studying and had put ceramics in the back of my mind.
While working as a staff artist in the Signal Arts Centre, I was shown how to throw on a pottery wheel by my uncle Keith. Keith had completed the DCCI Thomastown ceramics course and assured me that I would enjoy it if I gave it a go.
He was right, It was almost an instant addiction for me and I began spending long hours every day and night practicing my throwing under his guidance.
Unfortunately for me, I had a bit of a setback and suffered from a collapsed lung that required me to get a very painful surgery. The rehabilitation took a long time and I documented this process on the road to having my first solo exhibition.
I spent countless hours recovering from my surgery and using pottery as a gauge to check my level of recovery. At first I couldn’t even center one pound lumps of clay to make cups but eventually I began to regain some strength.
Fast forward a year or so and I was back throwing bigger pots and had made enough pots for my first solo exhibition, which was down in the Signal Arts Centre in Bray.
Signal and all its staff helped me some much to grow as an artist and gave me the opportunity to follow my passion and become a potter. I have a huge amount of gratitude towards all the management and staff there.
After completing my time with Signal I was kindly offered to be trained by the master potter Geoffrey Healy in his studio in the Rocky Valley Kilmacanogue.
Geoffrey has thought me so much about pottery and the philosophy behind the craft. He is a brilliant potter and a great mentor. Without Geoffrey, Keith and Signal Arts I would have went down a completely different route with my art/craft.
I am now fully committed to pottery as my passion and I love helping others to realize their own potential when it comes to creating with clay.
I will be producing small batch’s of ceramics for sale and taking requests for custom orders. I will also be offering classes in wheel throwing that will be available in the coming weeks.
